Phoenix-based Radyne ComStream [RADN] has won a significant
contract from National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). Terms
of the deal announced Wednesday were not disclosed.
NBC selected the Radyne ComStream Tiernan TDR-6 Integrated
HDTV Receiver Decoder (IRD) to distribute HDTV programming
to their affiliate stations nationwide. The TDR-6 HDTV receiver
is a modular IRD used to receive and decode compressed HDTV
signals.
NBC will use the high tech 8-PSK demodulator in the IRD to
conserve satellite bandwidth and operating costs.
The IRD's will be used to distribute HDTV programming from
the 2002 Olympic Winter Games from Salt Lake City, Utah, to
NBC's affiliate stations throughout the United States. Distribution
of HDTV programming will be accomplished via NBC's Skypath
distribution system, which also utilizes Tiernan HDTV encoding
equipment.
"Our TDR-6 IRD has advanced signal processing to allow
8-PSK and 16 QAM modulations that substantially reduce satellite
usage, an important requirement for the high bandwidth HDTV
signals," said Bob Fitting, CEO of Radyne ComStream.
Radyne ComStream designs, manufactures and markets satellite
Internet- infrastructure equipment, satellite broadband modems,
multicasting HDTV receivers, and ancillary products for digital
TV, data and telephone service.
