Sharp Corp. will adopt digital light processing (DLP) devices
for its rear projection TV sets, company president Katsuhiko
Machida disclosed during the opening of its Kameyama TV factory
in Mie Prefecture.
Sharp will offer rear projection LCD TV sets as large as
45 inches, three of which can be laid out on the 1500 x 1800
mm mother glass used at Kameyama LCD fab. "For Japanese
and European markets, I don't think there is strong demand
for much larger sizes than 45-inch," said Machida. In
the United States and to a lesser extent China, where houses
are relatively spacious, "we have to supply large TV
sets in the range of 60-inches. In terms of cost, the rear
projection form is reasonable for this size range," he
said.
Sharp had already said it has no plans to add PDP TVs to
its product portfolio. Hence, it has effectively selected
rear-projection TV. "Picture quality on DLP is good.
If the device can deliver good quality, we'll use it,"
said Machida.
Sharp previously demonstrated rear-projection prototypes
using its high-temperature CG silicon LCD panels. It now appears
to settled on a more cost effective, widely used device for
its rea projection TV sets.
