Epson has developed two HDTV LCD projection televisions
that realize large-screen, high-definition images for the
family at affordable prices. With the introduction of these
LCD projection televisions to the North American market in
early February under the brand name "Livingstation,"
Epson will enter the home TV market.
As the proliferation of digital and high-definition content
on television and DVD continues apace, demand is growing fast
in the market for thin, large-screen TVs with which users
can enjoy large and high-quality images in the comfort of
their living rooms. In the United States, in particular, 90%
of the population is already capable of viewing high-definition
television (HDTV) thanks to the spread of terrestrial TV broadcasting.
The increase of high-definition content, notably in the area
of live sports broadcasts, is spurring the trend toward digitization,
higher resolution, and larger screens in home TVs.
In SE07, its mid- to long-term corporate vision, Epson committed
itself to creating products that target the convergence of
still and moving digital images. As part of this strategy,
Epson has designed the world's first large-screen, HDTV LCD
projection TVs to incorporate a built-in printer. "
In 1994 Epson became the first to introduce business-use
projectors employing three high-temperature polysilicon (HTPS)
liquid crystal panels. Since then, the company has set forth
the effective use of projectors in business presentations
and led the business projector market, achieving the top share
in the global market in 2002. Furthermore, Epson has responded
to the needs of customers wanting to enjoy high-quality movie
viewing in the home by developing (liquid crystal projectors)
LCD projection televisions for home theater.
Epson's new TVs are based on the LCD projection television
system, which is more capable of providing high-definition
images on large screens at low prices compared to other TV
systems. The new products are built on the liquid crystal
projection technologies that Epson has accumulated over the
years, specifically the optical technology developed in its
projector operations and the technology for high-temperature
polysilicon panels, which are key devices in projectors. Moreover,
by using the expertise acquired in its global printer operations
to equip the products with a printer unit, Epson introduces
the new concept of enjoying both moving and still pictures
with a single machine. The new (liquid-crystal projection
televisions) LCD projection televisions allow users to not
only enjoy memorable large-screen images in their own living
rooms, but to easily print out their favorite images from
the big screen or from their digital cameras.
Epson showcased the products at the 2004 International Consumer
Electronics Show (CES), which opened in Las Vegas on January
8. For an overview of the products, please see Attachment
1.
Epson will continue its quest to bring color to people's
lives by applying its(LCD projection televisions) liquid-crystal
projection technology to develop imaging products that integrate
both still and moving imagery, thereby creating an environment
in which users can enjoy large, high-quality images at home
at their leisure.
