Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has become the
first in Korea to complete development flat screen TV. The
on-screen image has no distortion and external light reflecting
off the screen surface is significantly reduced, so the picture
is extremely clear and the viewer is not subjected to eye
fatigue.
The development of this product, a 2-year joint project,
was carried out with Samsung Display Devices, Samsung Corning
and Samsung Electro-Mechanics. Some 100 researchers worked
on the project, which cost 10 billion won
(US $8 million) to complete.
A few other companies have developed flat screen TVs with
a screen flatness rating which still has a minute curvature
in the screen center. The Samsung flat screen TV product,
by contrast, is a step more advanced pure flat. To eliminate
the concave appearance, the curvature ratio of the inner face
of the screen has been optimized. As a result, the screen
and image is completely flat.
A unique "progressive scanning" method has been
applied to improve picture quality. This method solves the
graininess problem that occurs with large-screen TVs, and
the picture clarity is improved by a factor of two or more.
The "progressive scanning" method, normally applied
to computer monitors, uses digital signal processing to take
a screen originally divided into two layers to display a single
image. As a result, the number of scanning lines is increased
twofold, enhancing the stability for a flicker-free picture
and allowing the finest details of the image to be revealed.
Conventional scanning methods show a 30 full frames each minute,
whereas progressive scanning shows 60 full frames during the
same time.
Samsung Electronics has used a multi-focus electron gun to
overcome the problem of dimming focus that occurs with highly
flat screen TVs. The company's new flat screen TV is designed
to provide a full range of multimedia functions. It can be
connected directly to a PC via the (S)VGA socket, witthout
the need for separate equipment, and used to play electronic
games or give presentations. It can also be used as the terminal
for Digital Video Disc Players, which will eventually replace
VCRs.
Samsung Electronics will put a 29" model of its pure
flat screen TV on the market at the end of September. By early
next year, a 32" wide screen model will also be available
in Korea and for export.
